BEHIND THE BRAND / INNES LAUREN

“This is a journey full of wonder and freedom. To simplify. To return to timeless style. To design with honesty.” - Innes Lauren

Who is the Innes Lauren woman, what does she love and stand for?

Essentially, the Innes Lauren woman is me. It’s always been me.. I don't know how to design any other way but for myself. I wear everything I design - everyday, it’s that or very little at all..

I love the ocean, travel, meeting new people and exploring new places. I’m extremely curious by nature and I wear my heart on my sleeve. I'm currently working on incorporating more of this part of me in my work.

Describe your design process, how do you approach conceptualising and bringing to life your collections?

I’m always thinking about what i’d like to wear next and how I can build on from previous collections.

I also have many old photographs from my childhood growing up in east Bali; of my Mum in swimsuits when she was my age, to when we were a young family; photos of my Dad in silks and Batik sarongs. This time in my life was very impactful and will always be used as a source of inspiration.

My design process is fabric-focused and I meditate on colour for quite a while after! (I often bring my colour charts away with me on my travels) And I bring my collections to life via my campaigns and imagery that follow.

Innes Lauren swim is proudly sustainable, utilising fabric crafted from 100% recycled textiles. Where is your material sourced and what innovative textiles are you using?

I source my material from Aquafil, the innovators behind Italian techno-fabric ECONYL. This sustainable project sees the company create regenerated nylon yarn from disregarded fishing nets gathered by registered charity Healthy Seas. It’s not only a new lease on life for tonnes of marine debris, but a leading solution to the rising crisis of ocean pollution. Currently eight million tonnes of waste end up in our seas each year, with 640 thousand tonnes of fishing nets abandoned to the sea floor.

Designing with longevity in mind, your approach to production is based on demand and avoiding excess waste. This allows for a slower, more meditative design process and leaves room for freedom and creativity. What business practices have you employed to achieve this?

My production may be more mindful but i’m always working, being a one woman show there’s never a dull moment. I work with customer feedback, what's recently sold well and reproduce based on this information, as well as my own intuition. I often sell out and then offer my made-to-order service.

What is the inspiration behind the collection?

This year I actually returned to Manggis, Bali, where I grew up as a child. This homecoming was different from previous trips I've taken.. I was searching for comfort, familiarity, maybe some closure.

I spent my days swimming and staring at the ocean, which is visible in my Midnight-Blue, whilst reflecting on memories of my childhood and the innocence of that time which you can see in my newly released, Pure White.
