LM Woman / Lexie Smith

The recent launch of Bread On Earth and pending Bread Web by Lexie Smith, Baker & Artist from Brooklyn, - prompted LM to look back to our candid 2016 Q&A with Lexie, covering the topics of art, NYC and the search for culinary bliss...

When and where were you happiest?

Memories are pretty malleable so that answer changes too often to give you a reliable one. A week into any love affair is a solid bet.

What piece of work are you most proud of?

My current project, Some of Today's New or @todaysneus, where I've been making a visual representation of a headline everyday.

How would you describe your art?

Fractured, fledging, rooted in the hand, but embracing of the machine.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My tendency towards crippling social anxiety and stomach aches.

Who are your favourite artists?

I won't claim to have favourites but I'm currently enamoured by some designers- Joe Cesare Colombo, Draw Down Books. Then there's always Jean Arp and Max Ernst.

Who are your female mentors?

My mamas, biological and otherwise.

What are three traits you admire most in a person?

Artful candidness, self-sufficiency, vulnerability.

On what occasion do you lie?

To avoid unnecessary offence.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Expensive cooking ingredients.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

I tend to go on tares with my semantic affections. Right now I'm particularly prone to claiming "I don't have a horse in this race".

What are your top three films of all time?

The Fall, Stand By Me, Paper Moon

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Tie between ingenuity, kindness, self-reliance.

Best thing about living in NYC?

Proximity to creative communities and resources.

And the worst thing about living in NYC?

The congestion, emotionally and physically.

What's your life motto?

Can't say I have one coined, but I'm pretty focused on the gut. Listening to it, following it, remaining in touch with my impulses and innate intrigues. Following all that towards bliss, or something...
